Avocado export markets

In 1995 Primor Produce was the first company to market New Zealand avocados in the USA. Then in 2000 Primor, together with three other exporters, initiated the first break bulk shipments of avocados to the USA in conjunction with LauritzenCool. In recent years Primor has also led marketing activity in Asia, being the first company to seafreight containers of avocados to Korea. In 2001 we were part of a joint venture involving three New Zealand exporters in the first seafreight shipments to Japan.

The emergence of a new fresh industry

Across the board New Zealand horticulture is on the move. Progress varies dramatically between different crops and regions. In recent years, the New Zealand avocado industry has emerged as a truly dynamic business. Primor is very proud to be a genuine leader and committed participant in this exciting sector that enjoys continued progress and development. With an industry structure that rewards hard work and innovative thinking, Primor and the growers we represent continue to thrive.

The answer lies in the soil

Located in New Zealand's north island, the provinces of Northland and the Bay of Plenty enjoy the climate, geography and soil types required to support production of superior quality avocados. Generous amounts of sunshine and rain contribute to a long growing season, while homegrown horticultural expertise ensures that crops are managed with care.

Our supply chain

Primor has developed New Zealand's strongest supply chain for avocados with packing, plus pre and post harvest services, in Northland and the Bay Of Plenty, the country's major growing regions. Our long term relationship with cornerstone packer Apata Ltd is a key component of our supply base. Apata possesses modern, state of the art facilities in Katikati and Whangarei, backed by enthusiastic and very capable personnel. In combination, Apata and Primor have continued to invest in order to seamlessly manage New Zealand's ongoing crop increases. More and more growers are seeing the simple benefits we are able to offer, with a broad, World view and a commitment to excellence. We are regarded as reliable, sound businesses with a positive, professional outlook.

In the Te Puke area and reaching further east in the Bay Of Plenty, we have a strong relationship with Trevelyan's Pack and Cool Ltd. Trevelyan's, like Apata, also pack kiwifruit and are highly regarded as quality packers within that industry as well as avocados. The key personnel at Trevelyan's are professional and focused, to complement their impressive facilities.

In the last season, Primor's share of the New Zealand avocado export business rose to 30%, a number that looks to increase. We have very much adopted a philosophy of engaging greater supply, with the simple view that we are better to manage supply than compete with it. As such, we are constantly looking outwardly at potential customers in new markets, to add to the strong customer list we enjoy now. Yet we aim to harness this greater supply strictly via our strong packing partners, to ensure we deliver continued quality performance as our volumes grow.
